My Personal Boho-Backyard Halloween Themed Wedding

A limited wedding budget of 5k in combination with some control issues turned my wedding into a very personal, DIY extravaganza- we did everything (by we, I mean my sister/maid of honor/business partner and I): we built a bar, baked wedding cupcakes, made games, designed programs and decor for days and even set it all up the day of the wedding a few hours before I went walking down the aisle... did I mention we did everything?

After it was all over, we decided it was too much fun to quit! I majored in theatre with an emphasis in acting/directing and always loved set decorating, costumes, etc. which I'm assuming sprung from my early obsessions with thrift store makeovers and Hobby Lobby. I teamed up with my sister Trisha who happens to be the most talented artist I know- she literally can make anything- not to mention she's the most OCD perfectionist you may ever encounter. We found that our strengths combined can culminate to create some pretty fabulous things and that 5k can (and did) go a long way. Come with me on a little tour!

A white craft pumpkin from Hobby Lobby clearance + a sharpie created the perfect trick or treat bar focal point. We wanted a 3 tier dessert tray but improvised with a much cheaper wire bathroom organizer.
The venue was spectacular and ever so helpful- it's actually a very relaxed family restaurant and bar where they happen to have horses, llamas, peacocks and chickens.
Behind the scenes- one of my very best friends hanging tulle in one of the two main dining areas. The ceremony space was converted to the dance floor/ wedding party seating after the i do's were done.

My centerpieces which only cost $10 each. We alternated these with the carved pumpkins. The vases were collected over time from Ross, the branches were found and the lanterns were made from 50 cent tea light holders and jewlrey wire from Hobby Lobby.

The candy bar (pre-guests)

Another overall look- we hung up Ikea lanterns wherever there was a will, way and outlet!

Our DIY photo booth- lots of fun Halloween props/costumes in a trunk, some cheap, fun graphic curtains and a digital camera on a tripod. We also added some extra lighting- the pictures of our guests were so hilarious to look at afterwards.

We designed and printed little signs for nearly everything and framed them.

The infamous giant jenga pieces. We made 2 sets so different groups could play and our guests wrote funny stories and well wishes as they played- definitely something we'll hold onto and add more stories to through the years.

Homemade tree trunk inspired cupcake stand- saw these all over Pinterest and decided to try making our own instead of spending $300-500 bucks.

Fondant/rice crispie cake toppers of us and our dogs courtesy of my sister.

Opted for a locking mailbox which I painted on a yellow and cream chevron- used this to keep cards safe.

I absolutely love the Princess Bride (who doesn't?) We actually had our officiate mimic this infamous opening line at start of our ceremony. If you don't know what I'm talking about PLEASE. Rent it. NOW.

Vintage Rustic Window Panes were strung up through the spaces.

All of the flowers came from a wholesale market downtown- made the bouquets and decorated the entire venue for around $350.

Our first dance! The fake yellow flowers that produced those petals were by far our biggest surprise as far as the impact they had- I LOVED the way they looked and since they were fake- they didn't get dirty or squished!

A look at the tulle and lace we strung up to act as an arbor. The room behind it was used as the buffet space (we did a gourmet burger bar) and a place to keep the cupcakes safe until it was time.

Reception in action- we had around 160 guests total.

Put flowers any and everywhere I could- I loved those cocktail napkins! They were a great Target find- just $2 for 25 I think.

Our programs were stapled onto a brown paper bag guests filled with candy and goodies. There was also a burned CD of our fave wedding tunes with a customized sleeve inside.

Guests in the other dining space which overlooked the dance floor.

A fire pit flanking the edge of the dance floor added another cozy area and some much needed warmth, turned out.

Instead of rice, bubbles, etc. we literally grabbed some yellow printer paper and a heart puncher and went to town.

And look at the results!

Our photo booth in action! A friend of mine started out as the "photographer" and then we just let guests help themselves and take turns.

The dress I got altered to tea length- it was just more fun and I thought fit the venue well.

My bridesmaids/man wore different dresses in the same hue from a hodge podge of places (most spent under $50) My sister/ maid of honor was in yellow- it was sort of her wedding too (lol)

Like I said, painted/printed signage everywhere.

Some hearts we cut out were put in these cutsey containers for guests on the ends of the rows to toss.

Our flower girls are my beautiful nieces- we knew throwing petals wasn't really their forte just yet so when I saw the big daisies at Hobby Lobby- I knew we had a winner.

Boys in suspenders and vests are just the cutest, aren't they?
Our centerpieces alternated- voila! A painted 'G' graces the face of the hardest to carve pumpkins known to man- hence just the polka dot cut outs in lieu of the 'G' originally set to be carved.

Programs- Thank.You. Photo.Shop.

Ordered custom headbands and corsages from Etsy- a prime resource for all things wedding.

Our monogram painted on the bean bag toss boards we made.

Strung baskets with baby's breath onto side of ceremony chairs and then transferred them to hooks on posts for the reception. Little cost and a big impact.

This might have been made the day of the wedding but look at how cute!

o.k.- they're pros...

Apparently not everyone caught on to my Ring BEAR-er reference but hey.. it was kinda chilly also.
